Although I have stated that I do not take custom-made order, I still received plenty of emails asking about this matter. Some of them even asked several times.
The reason I did not tell why custom-made is no longer available, in fact, is no secret. It is just I don’t know how to explain. I don’t know where to start : (
I spent two nights to write this and edited for many times, I hope it is not too messy.
I have no idea to how to explain that is why I didn’t give the customers an answer…….until few days ago I received an email asking me why I refused to take order.
So I think I need to give an answer to my customers who always support me, including the old and new one, to let all of you know, in fact, I have my difficulties.
I am not arrogant or I refused to receive orders, but custom-made order is quite a tiring job for me.
First of all, I need to capture at least 10 different types of fabrics for customers to choose and explain to them (I know this is a must).
Normally, I just simply captured the photos because I really have no time, that’s why the colours and pictures of/on the fabrics are not as close as the real items. Maybe because of this, some customers do not like the choices provided.
So I told the customers they can have a look on the fabrics which I put on my blog before and if they like it, they can ask for it.
Unfortunately, some customers are afraid of carrying the same fabrics, same designs.
LV bags are everywhere too and no one complain about it but this handmade bag might only be 2-3 pieces in the world and some customers are still afraid of having the same bag?
Another example is customers like this bag (including the fabric and design)，so customers emailed me asking about it. I told them it has been sold but I still have enough materials to make the second one. But at this time, they are afraid of having the same bag so they asked for other fabric choices.
The fabrics choices that I provided, in fact, have been mixed and matched to one another.
This is because I must make sure these fabrics will match perfectly with the materials and designs too!
If there is a case where the fabric that customer choose cannot be matched with what I have in my stock, then I will have to look in the shops which is not just pick and go.
In Malaysia, handmade is still not very popular and therefore the stock is very limited. Most of the time, I have to search overseas.
However, I cannot just buy a piece of fabric overseas due to the high shipping cost so I have to buy in bulky which means I have spent RM20 before I can earn RM10 from the customers.
The most common problem I’ve faced is some customers still asking for more than what I have provided. Please forgive me, I really can’t capture all the fabrics in my stock for you.
Of course, if you have more choices you can have more to match. Perhaps you will think why not just buy more fabrics since they all will be made into bags. It is okay if I have enough money but there are so many types of fabrics, they are all come into different colours, sizes, patterns etc.
In many cases, by just looking at the fabrics might not be attractive to you. However, the finished product can be another brand new look.
For the customers who have no confidence in my design, they want to mix and match themselves from the inner fabric, lace etc, even the fabrics with the same colours but different tones, they required me to match and capture for them.
If I need 20 minutes to mix and match one fabric and materials, and customers need to see so many kinds of matches, I have no idea how much time I have to spend in doing this.
It is not just as simple as fabric A + fabric B, there are many things to consider. I have to imagine the finished product before I start making it.
Some customers do not believe in my design, but they will still asking me whether their choices is pretty or not.
Sometime I have to spent whole afternoon ‘serving’ this.
I am just running a family-style handmade business and everything is made in a small sewing room. Beside the time in the sewing room, the rest is for my housework and children.
At the beginning, there is no money investing in this. Everything in the sewing room is made from what I have earned a little by little. It is 2 years since I started handmade and the experience is earned just like any other handmakers out there.
Finally, please understand I just have a little handmade business.
